How can I detect modeling scams? |

Understand that grooming, while a part of modeling, is not the entire picture. So schools who teach you poise, posture, diction, skin care, makeup application, the proper walk, etc. do not necessarily act as agents or find work for you - after you take their classes, you probably will be on your own.
Ask for the names, addresses and phone numbers of models and actors who have secured successful work - recently - based on the company's training.
Be cautious if the school has a special referral relationship with a specific modeling agency. The two could be splitting your fees, or the agency may not be suited to your needs.
Be suspicious if a company requires an up-front fee to serve as your agent.
Steer clear of modeling companies that require you to use a specific photographer. Compare fees and the work quality of several photographers.
Be leery of companies that only accept payment in cash or by money order. Read it as a strong signal that the company is more interested in your money than your career.
Be skeptical of local companies claiming to be the "biggest" agency or a "major player" in the industry, especially if you live in a small city or town.
Avoid high-pressure sales tactics. Never sign a document without reading and understanding it first. In fact, ask for a blank copy of the contract to take home and review with someone you trust. If the company refuses, walk away.
While certain services like prints, showreels, communication or promotion systems cost money NEVER pay someone to get yourself work, you'll most probably lose the money.
Find out how long they have been in business.
Find out their antecedents, who is the company behind them, are they involved in the fashion, glamour, television or movie industry.
If you are being asked to sign an exclusive agreement for any period of time, rather than for a project by any agency, make sure they give you a Assured Minimum Billing figure in the agreement itself.
Don't sign with anyone who cannot provide you with any assistance, most good agencies will provide everything from portfolio photography to grooming, scheduling and create a media awareness.
